The Crab Trap Restaurant is located on the site of Somerset Plantation, which was the property of John Somers (one of this area’s original settlers). Within a few hundred feet on the other side of the main intersection stands the Somers Mansion built between 1720 and 1726 by Richard Somers, the son of John Somers. The house now belongs to the State of New Jersey and is one of the oldest settlements in the state! Overlooking the Great Egg Harbor Bay in Somers Point is the Crab Trap Restaurant. The Crab Trap was established in 1967 by Jack Wallace. Back then it was known as Maenner’s Cafe serving tap beer and sandwiches to Somers Point residents.

No Longer is there a “horseshoe” bar and dirt floors. Today the Crab Trap flourishes as a 400 seat full service restaurant serving the finest seafood in South Jersey. As many businesses expand they often lose touch with the quality and small personal touches that made them special. At the Crab Trap we don’t believe that has happened or ever will. Longevity in the restaurant business is very unusual. A decade of food and service is a milestone worthy of celebrating, But since 1967? Quite remarkable.

Restaurants come and restaurants go but we have overcome the odds. We continue to provide friendly, prompt service and serve delicious food to thousands of wonderful patrons each year. Our menu still features some of the same classic dishes that have made us so popular over the years, but we also think you’ll appreciate some of the newer cuisine our chef’s have created to keep you enticed!

We have come a long way since the shots and beer of Maenner’s Cafe but Jack Wallace and his family are still at the helm of the Crab Trap today working closely with their staff to ensure you a pleasant dining experience. Whether it is a romantic first date, a family gathering, a night out on our Crabby Jack’s deck bar or a business function to impress your clients, we are here for you.

Four generations ago the Latz family arrived at the South Jersey beach colony. Mack and Allah Latz arrived in Atlantic City in 1890. They operated the Alamac Hotel with branches in both Manhattan and Lake Hopatcong. They were known for the glamour and excitement that they brought to their hotels and restaurants.

Their son Milton and his wife Evelyn bought the Knife & Fork Inn in 1927. They also had a special summer venture which was Latz’s Inn on the Bay at 800 Bay Avenue in Somers Point. Milton believed that Somers Point had many of the same qualities that made Cape Cod a great destination. Their reign in Somers Point encompassed the years between the great wars (1918-1941).

The post war years brought their son Mack along with his wife Elaine and brother Jim to the helm of the Knife & Fork Inn. They passionately operated the business through the second half of the twentieth century. Their sister Allah used her restaurant expertise to create Restaurant Latz in Majorca Spain. Mack and Elaine’s son Andrew was weaned and molded in the business in the changing climate of the Atlantic City scene.

Today Andrew and his wife Adrienne have recaptured the heart of the Latz family at the end of the rainbow on Bay Avenue. Through four generations the passion, intellect and sensibility of the Latz family have created a culinary environment which has delighted millions.
